Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday morning. As soon as President Vladimir Putin gave the green signal, the Russian military launched a military operation against Ukraine. Russia's move has drawn strong condemnation from many parts of the world, including the United States, which has called for an appropriate response.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has raised the specter of a catastrophic war in the world. It is believed that in the coming days, tensions between Russia and the US-dominated NATO country could lead to a third world war.

At the beginning of the 20th century, two groups of powerful European countries were divided. On one side were Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, on the other side were Britain, Russia and France.
On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was shot dead by a Serbian in Bosnia. The killings reverberated throughout Europe.
Austria blamed Serbia for the incident and called for its side within 48 hours, but Serbia ignored Austria's demands.
Jumped into the fight in Russia to support his friend Serbia. So Germany joined the fight to help its friend Austria-Hungary. Britain also became involved in the war when Germany invaded Belgium.
World War I was fought between two powerful alliances. On one side were the central powers which included Germany, Austria, Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria. On the other side were Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and America.
World War I ended with the surrender of Germany on 11 November 1918. Earlier in the World War, the Allies led by Britain and the United States won while the Allies of Germany lost.
The Treaty of Versailles was signed between Germany and the Allies on 28 June 1919 to settle the dispute. Under the treaty, Germany lost a large part of the territory and was subject to a number of sanctions.
